...our final farewell to la vie Française...

There is no excuse for the four full months it's taken me to finally close out this photo journal of our magical year abroad.  Suffice it to say that in December, we were overwhelmed with preparing to come "home," and since we made it back to the USA, we have been busier than ever with a long visit to Arizona in January, Brook starting his new job, settling into our stateside routine and of course Max's exciting 2 year-old life and preparing to meet our new addition in June.  Still, no amount of time passing could diminish the impact our year in France had on us.  As I look back at these photos to post them now, the friendships, memories and experiences bring tears to my eyes (cliché but true!).  INSEAD, Fontainebleau, and the friends we made have left indelible impressions on us.  We are so fortunate to have had this opportunity.  It was simply incredible.

Once classes ended in mid-December, we - along with four other families - packed up for a final trip together.  We spent five days at our friend Arnaud's family's summer home in Brittany.  Their property is spectacular, on the water with a lot of land but also tucked right in the middle of a charming village, and the weather was great for December on the coast of France.  We took walks, cooked lavish meals and enjoyed the last days we would share in this way for a long time to come.  The goodbyes were heartrending, but it was a beautiful way to celebrate the extraordinary year.

'tis the season...

Things are really wrapping up at INSEAD... so on Wednesday we took the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with the children.  We had a wonderful party with an old fashioned sing-along, some Christmas tree ornament decorating, and a visit from Santa!  It was great.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We hosted a Thanksgiving dinner chez nous last Saturday night for our INSEAD friends.  It was a very special night as none of our guests had ever celebrated Thanksgiving before.  We cooked a 12-pound turkey in our tiny oven, baked pumpkin pies, and had all the standard sides.  It was a delicious meal and a touching evening as this France Adventure officially starts to wind down.

grams comes to town...

We had a great visit with Grams in mid-November... she and Brook took a cooking class in Paris, and then she and I visited the Musee de l'Orangerie another day.  But Max had the most fun of all, playing and reading with his Grams.

the loire valley with grammie & papa...

Part-Two of my parents' visit was fantastic.  Most importantly, Max was fully recovered so he was in his usual happy and "energetic" form.  We drove to the Loire Valley where we stayed in an authentic 14th century chateau, and from there we made day trips to different lovely towns and famous, beautiful castles.  We had incredible weather, great food and lots and lots of laughs.  Here are the highlights in review.

Chateau de la Barre...

This is the chateau we stayed in for three nights.  It is beautiful, and so full of history you can't help feeling like you're stepping (way) back in time.  The owners were very interesting and attentive, and added another dimension to our stay.

Max didn't really understand the fragile nature of everything in the place.  Among other antics with the antiques, he liked using the luggage rack as a car.

Le Mans...

Le Mans is a city in the Loire Valley that is famous for the 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race held annually since 1923.  We visited for the afternoon on our first day in the Loire Valley.

Amboise...

Amboise is a town with a famous palace where Francois the 1st lived.  Interesting.  But we all thought it was even more interesting that he invited Leonardo da Vinci to live there during his final years (they were apparently very good friends).  Now da Vinci's house is a museum, and they have turned the property into the most incredible "park," where they have recreated many of his early inventions.  My explanation and the photos do not do it justice... it is so spectacular.

As a side note, Max learned how to see-saw at da Vinci's house.  Cool.

Chenonceau...

What can I say about Chenonceau without boring the pants off of you?  Well, it is an incredible castle built across a river.  It is charming and more understated than other castles I've visited.  I loved it.  Enough said.

Chambord...

Last one, I promise.  On our last day we visited Chambord, possibly the MOST famous castles in France.  It has the awesome double-helix staircase.  And the crazy roof top.  It is beautiful.  It is huge.  It is majestic.  I loved it.  Really.

paris with grammie & papa...

Finally, a post about my parents' wonderful visit... It was a two-part adventure, the first part being a long weekend stay in Paris and the second being an excursion to the Loire Valley.  Unfortunately for all of us, Max was really sick (he had bronchitis) during Part One.  We tried to enjoy Paris life - and the absolutely stunning weather - to the best of Max's ability, but we were a bit limited.  We did however venture into the incredible Tuileries Gardens... and in general, we had a great time.

a champagne adventure...

In early October we spent a weekend in the Champagne region with "the friends."  We rented this very cool house...

We cooked big meals and enjoyed "communal" living.  The kids ran wild and the adults relaxed (or tried to).  Here we all are before our venture into the town...

No visit to the Champagne region is complete without a visit to a vineyard.  We found this small, family-run vineyard...

We visited the vines and ate some of the grapes...

 

And on Sunday morning, we celebrated Rafaela's 2nd birthday!
